Key rules for Mandarin counting logic
The Perfect Logic
Mandarin numbers are strictly additive. 11 is 'Ten-One' (shí yī). 21 is 'Two-Ten-One' (èr shí yī). Once you know 1-10, you technically know up to 99.
Two Ways for 'Two'
Use 'èr' for counting (1, 2, 3...) or in positions like 12 or 22. Use 'liǎng' (两) specifically when quantifying things (e.g., 2 bottles, 2 people).
The Power of Wàn
Chinese uses a base-10,000 system (wàn). While English says 'One Hundred Thousand', Chinese says 'Ten Wàn' (shí wàn). It resets every 4 zeros instead of 3.
The Zero Gap
If a number skips a place value (like 105), you must say 'líng' (zero). 105 is 'yī bǎi líng wǔ'. Multiple zeros in a row are only spoken as one 'líng'.
