Italy is a boot-shaped peninsula that juts out of southern Europe into the Adriatic Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and other waters.Italy borders Austria, France, Vatican City, San Marino, Slovenia, and Switzerland.

The Italian Flag has 3 stripes: green, white and red. Italy's flag represents hope, faith and charity. Green is hope, white denotes faith and red is the colour of charity. It's often called Il Tricolore.

The capital city of Italy is Rome
Rome was founded in 753 BC and the Roman Empire was born in 27 BC. The Roman Empire ruled Europe and parts of North Africa right up until 395 AD. After the fall of the Empire, Italy was divided into separate states until 1861. Italy's national day is called Festa della Repubblica and it's celebrated each year on 2 June.

Leonardo Da Vinci was born near Florence in Italy in 1452. Leonardo’s surname Da Vinci simply means ‘of Vinci’, a Tuscan village not far from Florence, which is where his father’s family took their name. Leonardo da Vinci is best known as an artist, his work as a scientist and an inventor make him a true Renaissance man. Leonardo da Vinci was a scientist and artist who was the first to prove the world is round and not flat.

Popular dishes in Italy are: Risotto, Pizza, Spaghetti, Lasagne, Gelato (ice cream), Cannoli. Pizza: was invented in Napoli around 1860.

Football is the most popular sport in Italy.

Shakespeare set many of his legendary plays in the beautiful and romantic country of Italy.
Shakespeare plays set in Italy include Othello which is set in Venice, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra – both of which are set in Rome, and The Two Gentleman of Verona which takes place across Verona and Milan. Of course, one of the most famous Shakespeare plays of all, Romeo and Juliet was also set in Verona

Carlo Collodi wrote the legendary story Pinocchio in 1880. It was originally serialised in the children's newspaper, Gioniale per i Bambini.

The Vatican City is the world's smallest country. The Vatican City in Rome covers just 1000 acres. In 1929 it became a sovereign nation and the Pope is officially its head of state.

Italian city of Pisa, known worldwide for its nearly four-degree lean, the result of an unstable foundation.

Venice is situated across a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by bridges, of which there are 400.
